Fleece Raw and Washed
Mohair, the fiber produced by Angora goats, has been valued for centuries for its' soft texture and high luster. Buckwheat Bridge Angoras is proud to offer individual mohair fleeces and bulk mohair for purchase direct from grower to buyer. We believe that the first step to beautiful fiber is healthy, well nourished animals. Our goats are essentially "free range" the nanny goats only coming into the barn for kidding. They are fed a diet of naturally grown hay from our fields and a whole grain ration to supplement that in the winter. Summers are spent on pasture, grazing. Our goats produce natural white, as well as a small number of naturally colored, mohair fleeces.
Fleeces and fiber in grades of first kid, second kid, yearling, and adult or grown mohair are available. Staple lengths range from 3 to 6 inches. Each of our goats and fleeces is evaluated according to micron count. Each fleece is graded, hand sorted and cleaned of vegetable matter and stain. This ensures the purchaser that he or she is receiving top quality fiber in the grade selected. First time and experienced mohair spinners and knitters are encouraged to call us with any questions regarding our fiber.
Cormo, a wool fiber, is produced by the Cormo Sheep. A Cormo is a registered, pure bred, sheep originally bred by crossing Corriedale rams with superfine Saxon Merino ewes. The wool produced by these sheep is of a true white color, 4 - 5 inch staple length and in the 20-24 micron range ( very fine). Cormo combines fineness with a staple length of fiber more manageable by handspinners. Cormo fleece is available on a limited basis. Each year a small number of our sheep are blanketed in order to ensure a beautiful, vegetable matter free, white fleece available for handspinners. This premium fiber is available in limited quantities. We also, at times, offer a select number of Cormo cross fleeces, that are naturally colored. These range from light brown to deep brown and grey/black.
